In 1967 long time store manager Johnny Michieli purchased Cosco’s Grocery from Peter Cosco in 1967. With a new owner and a new name, “Johnny’s” began. First as Johnny’s Red and White and a few years later as Johnny’s Tomboy. For the next nineteen years Johnny operated out of the 4500 square foot store he originally bought from Peter, with a face lift and remodel project in the late 70’s. As the business grew so did the need for more space. Over time Johnny purchased adjacent property with the hope of some day of expanding.

In the fall of ‘84 Johnny announced his plan to build a brand new store. At 13000 square feet, triple the existing space, he didn’t imagine we could possibly out grow that building too.

By the spring of ’86 the new store was open for business. It was an instant success. With much larger fresh departments, more selection and the addition of a full service deli and bakery it seemed just what the people of Sioux Lookout were looking for.

Nineteen ninety was a monumental year. Breaking free from the Tomboy buying group ended a fourty year relationship with our wholesaler and once again a name change, to Johnny’s Food Market. Being totally independent allowed us the flexibility to clearly focus on the needs of our local customer and again success continued. As the business continued to grow again it became obvious that another expansion was necessary.

The purchase of the vacant Central School property in 2002 was the first step in realizing the completion of our new supermarket. On February 28, 2005 we opened the doors to Johnny’s “Fresh” Market as we know it today. With a combined 42500 square feet of retail and storage space we strive to offer the service and selection our customers deserve in a comfortable, spacious shopping environment.
